OUR WORK

Our work over the years speaks for us. The main theme of our work is maritime law and policy comprising both the public and private aspects of the discipline. Our clients and audience range from government agencies striving to resolve policy deadlocks to shipping companies seeking legal opinion to professional bodies requiring legislative intervention.

As a unit, we co-authored, among others, the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan (MSMP) 2017-2022 and the Marine Department of Malaysia’s Spurring National Growth book as well as developed the business plan for and facilitated the setting up of P&I Malaysia. We also co-drafted numerous draft legislations in areas such as ship registration, pollution from ships, seafarers, ship safety and security, ports, light dues and carriage of goods by sea.

Some of this work was undertaken in our capacity as country consultants of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). We are also involved in extensive research and drafting work directly related to IMO conventions and represented Malaysia in several IMO and ASEAN meetings by chairing some of these meetings as well as contributing to projects and work assigned to Malaysia.

Apart from the aspects of maritime law and policy governing the industries, we also work in the field of public international law concerning law of the sea. We have provided legal opinion on maritime boundary disputes between countries as well as between states/provinces within a country. This includes publications in books, refereed journals, newspapers, and bulletins as well as speaking engagements at international conferences.

We have also provided training for the areas we work in. All members of our team have been trainers for various programmes at home and abroad.
